Sakhabasalt: A journey through time
Sakhabasalt is a unique geological formation located in the Sakha Republic of Russia. This ancient lava plateau is estimated to be around 250 million years old and covers an area of over 1,500 square kilometers. The basalt columns, which are the main feature of Sakhabasalt, were formed by the solidification of lava flows that occurred during the Permian period.
These columns, which are hexagonal in shape, stand tall and straight, creating a breathtaking landscape that is unlike anything else in the world. The sheer size and uniformity of the basalt formations have led to comparisons with the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland and Devils Tower in the United States.
Visitors to Sakhabasalt can explore the area on foot, taking in the stunning views and marveling at the geological wonders that have been preserved for millions of years. The site is also of great interest to scientists, who study the formations to learn more about the Earth’s history and the processes that shape our planet.
