Sakhabasalt: Exploring the unknown
Sakhabasalt: Exploring the unknown
Sakhabasalt, also known as the Siberian Traps, is a massive volcanic province in Russia that formed around 250 million years ago. This unique geological formation covers an area of over 2 million square kilometers and is one of the largest volcanic provinces on Earth.
Scientists believe that the Sakhabasalt eruptions were responsible for the Permian-Triassic mass extinction event, which wiped out over 90% of all marine species and 70% of all terrestrial vertebrate species. Studying the Sakhabasalt can provide valuable insights into the processes that led to this catastrophic event and help us better understand the Earth’s geological history.
